Fuller Smith (at bat), along with Evan Button, were named team captains for the 2008 season.

The Ole Miss baseball team played four innings of an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday, which served as the completion of Sunday's rain-shortened scrimmage.

After falling behind 2-0 in Sunday's abbreviated action, the Blue Team rallied for five runs Tuesday and kept the White Team off the scoreboard for a 5-2 victory.

Saturday, the Blue Team also won 7-3.

Pitching again keyed the Blue Team's victory after sophomores Garrett Duff and Wade Broyles combined to hold the White Team to just one hit through four innings.

Duff was especially impressive in his two innings of work. The junior college transfer from Richland College in Dallas struck out the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the first inning. Duff, who is likely a candidate for the closer's role, added one more strikeout to his total the following inning and did not allow a runner to reach base.

Broyles also turned in a solid performance in his two innings. The right-hander struck out two batters and also picked off Tim Fergusson from first base to end the scrimmage.

Offensively, Fuller Smith took advantage of getting the starting nod in left field for the Blue Team with an impressive day hitting the ball. Smith was 1-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base, a run scored and a pair of RBI.

White Team pitcher Rory McKean struggled some with his command and surrendered four runs in his two innings, though only three were earned.

Sophomore Phillip Irwin pitched the final two innings for the White Team and allowed one hit on one run.

Captains named

The Ole Miss baseball team recently voted on team captains for the 2008 season.

Junior Evan Button and senior Fuller Smith were each chosen for the honor by their peers.

Button has been a key utility player for the Rebels each of the previous two seasons. The St. Louis native is a natural shortstop but has played each of the four infield positions at one time during his career. After backing up Zack Cozart at shortstop for much of the 2007 season, Button started the Oxford Regional at first base.

Smith enjoyed a productive first season in Oxford in 2007 after transferring from Hill Junior College in Texas.

The left-fielder batted .254 with a home run and 17 RBI last season.

Kight Arrested

Sophomore Cullan Kight was arrested Jan. 26 on charges of public drunk and possession of a fake driver's license. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Kight, 20, was a little-used first baseman for much of last season until he drew his first start during the Oxford Regional in 2007. He is expected to compete for the starting first baseman's job this season and no disciplinary actions have been announced.

In years past, though, several Rebel players have been suspended for the opening weekend of the season following off-season incidents.

Mark Wright was suspended for the Maine series in 2006 after being charged with DUI during the summer.

Similarly, Miles Franklin was suspended for the opening series of the 2004 season after an undisclosed violation of team rules.
