Sophomore Ole Miss linebacker Allen Walker has been suspended indefinitely by head coach Houston Nutt after he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol Saturday morning.
"I'm very disappointed in Allen," Nutt said in a university-released statement. "He let the team and his family down. Starting Monday morning, discipline will be handled internally as we begin a program with Allen, which will include alcohol education, community service and other areas."
Walker, 20, emerged as the starting "will" linebacker in spring practice during Nutt's first season.
Walker was signed by former head coach Ed Orgeron out of Olive Branch High School and was ranked as the state's top player. Despite a four-star recruiting ranking, Walker had trouble finding the field under the former coaching staff.
After red shirting in 2006, Walker appeared in 11 games, mostly on special teams, as he recorded 13 tackles.
Walker got a fresh start under Nutt as he finished spring practice with two tackles and a sack in the Grove Bowl with the first team defense.
The university-issued statement was not clear about whether Walker would miss games in the 2008 season. Ole Miss hosts Memphis on Aug. 30 to open the season.

It's not football season. Just make him run his tail off as punishment. No need to suspend him from games 6 months from now. That only hurts the team, not him. (Continued…)

He'll be un-suspended just as soon as the first creampuff opponent (i.e., Memphis) starts running over the left side effectively. Houston's never been a stickler for the rules because he can't follow them himself (see dog-face Donna Bragg fiasco). (Continued…)
